Serving with IDES over the last year has been beyond incredible. I’ve seen firsthand thousands of volunteers giving selflessly to serve the Lord. I have to admit, however, that it was a bit intimidating at first as I considered the responsibility of working for an organization like IDES.
After all, I don’t have a degree in theology, I can’t always quote a passage of applicable Scripture if asked, and I was a C student in public speaking. What could I possibly contribute?
I’m reminded of the story of the feeding of the 5000 that’s found in the Gospels. Working in the GAP food-packing program where we see God multiply our efforts to feed over 17 million people inspires me daily. I think in this case, I relate most to the boy who provided the fish and loaves. We don’t know a lot about him, but we do know that he gave all that he had at the time. Similarly, God takes what we have and always makes it enough.
A lot of us question how we can serve God or we tend to create obstacles in our minds to justify why we choose to pass on service opportunities. We may think we’re too busy, we’re too old, or even that we’re too young. In my case, I often think, “I’m just a regular person, what do I have to give?”
In Acts 4:13 we read, “ When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.”
When I read this verse, I’m reminded yet again that God takes what we have to offer and when we earnestly serve Him, He ALWAYS makes it enough. I hope you remember that, too!
