In August of 2022, a young man named Tariq had an interview go viral over his enthusiastic review of how good corn on the cob is. During this interview he even tells the listeners to have a “corn-tastic day”! The interview was even made into a music video which propelled Tariq into further popularity. I'd like to tell you my own story about corn!
In late 2022, a Church from Greenville, IL, reached out to me about donating a portion of their corn harvest to IDES to use for hunger relief. Having never dealt with such a donation, I began my research. After finding 2 partners willing to receive such an offering, we joyfully accepted the corn—all 80 thousand pounds of it! Fast-forward to early 2023 and after two inspections with the USDA and DNR, we received full approval to send 40 thousand pounds of corn to Honduras and El Salvador!
Each of these partners and the respective communities have been greatly blessed by these donations. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people have been given an extra staple to add to their diet. The majority of the donations have simply been given out in 5-10 lb bags. One partner has experimented in planting some of the corn in an attempt to further the harvest, and has had success! This is all because one community wanted to share in their harvest. It never ceases to amaze me how God can multiply the gifts given by his people. I’m so thankful for the church and community in Greenville, IL, that was faithful with their harvest.
Just remember corn is good, and God is even better!
“‘When you reap the harvest of your land, moreover, you shall not reap to the very corners of your field nor gather the gleaning of your harvest; you are to leave them for the needy and the alien. I am the Lord your God.’” (Leviticus 23:22)
