The more I travel around the world with IDES and meet the individuals who are blessed by what God is doing through His people, the more I realize that every Christian should try to take at least one international mission trip. Getting out of our comfort zones, especially in the States, and meeting people where they are physically and mentally is such a great opportunity for us to show God's love.
The body of Christ is global and it's fascinating to meet other Christians in their cultures. It's important for those who claim Jesus Christ as their Savior to love all people of all nations.
Mark 12:30-31 says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
During a recent trip to Ethiopia and Kenya I saw the love of God in action and how even in difficult circumstances, people are so faithful to God. Witnessing the sacrifices that are being made by local evangelists to help their community physically and spiritually was incredibly powerful. It was a great reminder that even in difficult circumstances in our own lives, we should always keep our eyes on Christ and be Kingdom-focused.
Hebrews 12:2-3 says, “We must keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete. He endured the shame of being nailed to a cross, because he knew that later on he would be glad he did. Now he is seated at the right side of God’s throne! So keep your mind on Jesus, who put up with many insults from sinners. Then you won’t get discouraged and give up.”
Even in difficult times, we can effectively show God’s love to others if we look to the One who gives us strength.
