As I travel from disaster site to disaster site, it is amazing to witness the selfless dedication that our volunteers possess as they bring the love of Christ to those who are hurting after a time of crisis. The scope of devastation from a hurricane is so widespread that it is difficult to comprehend the amount of need that exists for so many people. It is a large harvest field full of people who need their physical needs met, but they also need their spiritual needs met as well.
I am reminded of the verse from Matthew 9:35-38:
“35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
There are so many hurting people around the world and many do not know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. As Christians, we are called to take action and to make disciples no matter how difficult the situation. We as individuals may not be able to help everyone who has need, but we can make a huge impact in the lives of those we assist with their physical needs, which can open the door for taking care of their spiritual needs as well. Only Jesus Christ can help with those spiritual needs. Let’s ask the Lord of the harvest to give us wisdom when going into the harvest field.
